Man & Pickup Truck Break Through Ice Of St. Lawrence River

A 53 year old Waddington man looking to do some ice fishing is counting his blessings after he and his pickup truck broke through the ice on the St. Lawrence River.

Timothy Martin of 175 McGinnis Road was driving his Chevy pickup on the ice near the Wilson Hill Boat Launch when the vehicle went through.

He said he had been out on the ice a few days ago and it was close to a foot thick.

Martin said he kept his cool when the ice gave way.

"When my front end went through, I opened up my window and jumped my butt right out of there," he said. "I just knew I had to get the window open, get up on top of the truck and jump off to the side. I watched my truck sink."

The mishap occurred at approximately 3 p.m. Monday.

All you can see of the truck is its roof sticking out of the water.

Martin said he plans on trying to retrieve his truck from the water Tuesday morning because he can face costly fines from the Department of Environmental Conservation each day it remains in the water.
