A 32 year old town of Lyme man faces assault charges for allegedly injuring an 11 month old baby.

Kelly Keegan of 28611 Empie Road near Three Mile Bay was arraigned late Thursday afternoon on first-degree assault and reckless assault of a child.

The infant, identified as Kate Cawvey,  was injured last Friday and was listed in serious condition at Upstate Medical University in Syracuse Thursday night.

Keegan is the boyfriend of the baby's mother, Tayler Cawvey.

Keegan is not the infant's father, according to the Jefferson County sheriff's department.

Jefferson County Sheriffs Department said the incident happened at the home Keegan shared with the baby's mother on Empie Road, just outside Three Mile Bay.

Keegan was babysitting the child and a neighbor called 911, officials said.

According to court documents, the baby suffered traumatic brain injury, violent blunt force trauma, a fractured arm and friction burns to her ears.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Department said its investigation showed the injuries were the result of child abuse.

Keegan was ordered held in the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash or $50,000 bond.

According to 7 News reporter Stacy Lange, Keegan was calm during his arraignment, while family members in the town court were crying.

As Keegan was being led to the police car, someone screamed "I love you" from across the street.
