A 21 year old Carthage man is accused of fracturing his infant son's skull at the baby's mother's home in St. Lawrence County.

State police charged Matthew Monnat with a felony count of reckless assault of a child and a misdemeanor count of endangering the welfare of a child.

Investigators said four week old Mason Monnat was injured Friday night at his mother's home on Limekiln Road in Richville.

He was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital for treatment.

Hospital staff suspected child abuse and notified social services, which then contacted police.

According to police, Matthew Monnat said he accidentally dropped the baby.

The infant was transferred to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, Vermont.

Monnat was arraigned in Fowler Town Court and ordered held in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.
