St. Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies charged a 60 year old DePeyster man with assault, third degree, after he allegedly hit a member of the Macomb town council.

The town councilman was not named in a press release from the sheriff's department, but deputies noted he's 50 years old.

Deputies said Ronald L. Cardinell, 60, of DePeyster punched the councilman in the left shoulder, causing swelling and bruising.

The incident took place at Macomb town hall on Route 58 Tuesday afternoon, according to the press release.

Cardinell was released to reappear in town court at a later date.
