Man Charged With Manslaughter In Shooting Of Hunting Buddy

A St. Lawrence County man is being held without bail after being charged with manslaughter.

The sheriff's department arrested 20 year old Tyler Soper of 883 Trout Lake Road in Edwards.

He's charged with second-degree manslaughter in connection with a December 11, 2011 hunting accident off Fordham Hill Road in the town of Russell.

Soper allegedly shot his hunting companion, 49 year old Paul Hatch of Russell.

Hatch died of a gunshot wound to the chest.

Soper told deputies in December that he shot at what he thought was a wounded deer, but hit Hatch instead.

Hatch was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Soper was arraigned in Pierrepont Town Court and is being held in the county jail pending further court action.
