Carthage Man Faces Manslaughter Charge Following Hunting Accident

A Carthage man has been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of a Deer River man.

Lewis County Sheriff deputies say 55 year old Arnold Camidge was killed while he and three others were hunting deer off Station Road in the town of Denmark.

Deputies say one of Camidge's hunting companions, 19 year old Travis Shampine of Carthage, told police he shot Camidge when he fired one round at what he thought was a deer.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.

Shampine was charged with second degree manslaughter. He was arraigned in Lowville village court and committed to jail on $15,000 bail or $30,000 bond.

Camidge was taken by ambulance to Carthage Area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Deputies say the investigation is continuing. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday afternoon.
