Man Who Sold Counterfeits In North Draws Probation, Fine

A man who did  business in Watertown's and Massena's malls will pay a total of $12,000 for selling counterfeit goods.

Cengiz Gulbay operated stores in Salmon Run Mall, Watertown, and at the St. Lawrence Centre Mall in Massena.

Gulbay was sentenced to three years of probation, community service, a $4,000 fine and $8,000 in restitution. The sentencing took place last Thursday.

On December 20, 2010 and April 4, 2011 special agents from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security raided Gulbay's stores and seized  nearly 8,000 counterfeit scarves, handbags, holiday ornaments and jewelry purporting to be manufactured by Chanel, Coach,  Louis Vuitton, Rudolf & Me, Inc., and others.

All the counterfeit items were later forfeited by Gulbay to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
