Massena Reenactment Marking Civil War's 150th Anniversary

The smell of gun powder fills the air this weekend at Robert Moses State Park in Massena.

Union and Confederate soldiers armed themselves for battle, accompanied by the sights and sounds of a Civil War encampment.

Hundreds of historic reenactors have converged on Massena for the 11th annual Civil War Reenactment weekend.

Canvas tents and open cook fires from military camps popped up across the grounds as part of the St. Lawrence County Historical Association's ongoing observance of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War.

Artillery cannons will be on display while soldiers in wool re-creations of military uniforms will conduct several mock battle sequences and other demonstrations over the two-day event.

The encampment opened Saturday morning and runs through 1 p.m. Sunday with a battle reenactment and closing ceremony.
