Mercy Complex Set To Close April 2013It's now a countdown to next April 1 for the Mercy complex in downtown Watertown. Samaritan Medical Center, which holds the facility in receivership, has told Mayor Jeff Graham that it plans to vacate the building by next April. The buildings will be closed and locked at that time. Graham briefed members of Advantage Watertown on the situation Thursday morning. The major concern is that the owners or leinholders of the Mercy complex may have no interest in maintaining the facility after Samaritan leaves. "There is a danger in having something that large and that profound in terms of what could happen right in the middle of downtown," Graham said, "and there's no local control over it and no interest, no interested party maintaining it and so on." The nursing home patients at Mercy will be going to a new complex now under construction off outer Washington Street. Graham says the city should take Samaritan up on an offer to have access to the Mercy buildings between now and next April for a survey of redevelopment or demolition costs. |
