Mercy Owner Won't Abandon Property

The company which owns Mercy Care Center in Watertown says it won't abandon the property.

That's according to the city's code enforcement supervisor, who got a letter from the company's legal counsel.

There have been concerns that now that the building is empty, it will be left to deteriorate and eventually end up in the city's lap for back taxes.

"It could become quite a problem over there because it's such a large facility. It's going to be inviting to a lot of types of people that don't have good intentions," said Code Enforcement Supervisor Shawn McWayne.

Two months ago, a mystery developer reached out to the finance company which controls the property.

There's no word yet on whether that developer is still interested in the building.
