Military Matters: Free Snow Removal For Local Families

Snow removal in the north country gets to be a pretty routine task for most people.

But for military families already dealing with the stress of having a loved one deployed, it can be one routine task too many.

That's where Project EverGreen's SnowCare for Troops comes in.

It's a nationwide program to match families of deployed servicemen and women with volunteers to plow the driveway and shovel the sidewalk.

It's taking care of a physical need and helping on an emotional level.

"There's already so much on my plate between home, work and taking care of the children, and just knowing that they're going to come in and they're going to take care of the snow just gives me peace of mind and just knowing that somebody's taking care of me," said Rebecca Burgos, whose husband is serving in Afghanistan.

"Our military families and our military that are deployed, they need to know that they're supported in some way," said Joy Westenberg, SnowCare For Troops Project Manager.

For one north country volunteer, taking care of a military family is simply returning a favor.

"My son was also military and he was deployed and his neighbor took very good care of his home while he was gone, so I think it's our duty," said Dina Jareo, owner of Creek Bend Lawn Services.

It's a duty she and her family takes very seriously.

They're out every day if necessary - absolutely free of charge.

"The word thank you simply is not enough.  I could not be more grateful for what they're doing for my family," said Burgos.

Jareo says she feels likewise.

"For what Fort Drum gives to our community, I think that we need to give back to them," said Jareo.

SnowCare for Troops Project Manager Joy Westenberg says the need for help is especially great up here.

We have snow. And we have a lot of deployed troops.

What we don't have is enough volunteers.

"You don't have to be a professional to strap on those snow boots and grab a snow shovel. If you can help one family, that's one family being helped," said Westenberg.

If you would like to volunteer, or if you're family is looking for a little help, you can register online.
