Military Matters: WHS Students Honor Vets With 'Miss Saigon'

Fair Warning - "Miss Saigon" is pretty heavy.

But ask any veteran of that era, and they'll tell you the Vietnam War was heavy.

"We've talked with a couple Vietnam vets, who of course don't have good memories of Vietnam, so it will be interesting to see. I think it will be a lot of mixed emotions," said director Russ Faunce.

The same goes for the Watertown High School students putting the finishing touches on their production of the musical "Miss Saigon."

The military connection hits especially close to home for a number of the student actors.

"My dad is in the military. He's actually in Afghanistan right now," said Taylor McCown, who's a member of the cast.

Kids from military families say they approached show differently than their peers.

"I feel like I have a better understanding of it because I've had so family members that have been in the military back in Vietnam," said Austin Myers, a military kid and member of the cast.

"I feel like I have a better understanding through this - kind of more of an appreciation," said McCown.

Because the students want to show their appreciation for the military community in the north country, anyone with a military ID can see the show for free on Thursday night.

"It's a military theme from beginning to end and it's kind of neat being in a military community being able to share that with the military community," said Faunce.

"It shows that they respect the military, that they welcome us," said Kristen Castana, a military spouse who's son is in the cast.

They want to do what they can to help.

During intermission, they'll collect free will donations to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project.

Performances are set for:

- February 9 at 7 p.m.

- February 10 at 7 p.m.

- February 11 at 3 and 7 p.m.

- February 12 at 1 p.m.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for senior citizens and students.

All performances will be at the high school auditorium.
