Mohawk Council Upset Over Police Award

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne is now weighing in on the controversy surrounding a police officer who was recently awarded a medal for bravery by the Canadian government.

Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service Constable Michael Biron was honored for his efforts to save Edward and Eileen Kassian of Massena from their burning car four years ago.

At the same time, many blame him for causing the accident in the first place.

The Kassians and one other person died in the fiery crash.

The Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has written a letter to the Governor General of Canada to address concerns within the Akwesasne community.

The letter criticizes the government for failing to consult with Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service about Biron's nomination.

"What has resulted from his nomination is the re-opening of a wound that is still in the process of healing.  The award has resulted in threats and accusation being made against Officer Biron claiming that he was somehow involved in the nomination-when in actuality he had nothing to do with it. Yet, had he refused to accept the award, it would have left the impression that he was guilty of something," the letter read.

Biron had been chasing a suspected cigarette smuggler on Cornwall Island in November 2008 when the vehicle he was pursuing smashed into the Kassian's car.

The couple and the suspected smuggler were killed.
