A former SUNY Canton student has been indicted by a St. Lawrence County grand jury on a charge she intentionally started a fire in a Potsdam apartment house that was occupied by nine college students.

Brandi Saumier, 21,  of Winthrop was indicted on a felony charge of second-degree arson.

The October 25 fire at the Pierrepont Avenue multi-unit apartment destroyed the building. All nine SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam students managed to safely get out of the burning structure.

Saumier allegedly started the fire in a pile of clothes she put on the bedroom floor of her first floor apartment.
