NYS Education Commissioner Meets With Local Schools

The state's top educator was in the north country Saturday to discuss the state of education in New York.

Commissioner of Education John King Jr. was at St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES in Canton, meeting with local school officials.

Topics of discussion included recent changes to teaching standards and how schools can better deal with big budget crunches:

"How we as a state can try to work together to really get more done despite having less resources," King explained.

"They're having to figure out very serious efficiencies," said James Dawson of the State Board of Regents, "So I wouldn't say that there's more that they could be doing, but they're under a severe challenge right now."

St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES Superintendent Tom Burns says he hopes to make meetings like this an annual event.
