Between the First Presbyterian Church in Lowville and the village green sits a short stretch of pavement.

It's name?

"That is the only street in Lowville with no name," said villager Richard Defore.

The nameless street has been around for decades, but it wasn't until recently that its nameless state was brought to the attention of the village.

Parishioners discovered that their church had no physical address.

"The church building has an address, but it's on North State Street, but it doesn't face North State Street," said Rev. Herbert Swanson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church.

Neither the post office nor 911 can identify a name for the street.

Even with a GPS device, you can't find it.

So how can a street exist without a name?

We didn't find a conclusive answer, but there is plenty of speculation.

"I was told the street was put in much late than the streets it connects," said Swanson.

Because of the conundrum, the village board has decided to hold a contest.

The village will entertain suggestions for names from the public and choose the best one before winter.

"Everybody's excited! It's rare that you don't have a name on a street," said village Mayor Donna Smith.

And so, if all goes as planned, the final nameless street in Lowville will gain a name and a church an address.
