New & Dangerous Drug Emerges: 'Glass Cleaner'

It’s the newest drug on the scene - glass cleaner.

It has the same effects as bath salts: extreme paranoia and hallucinations.

Two people, Sheena Bray and Chad Bishop, were arrested on Sunday in Watertown after being accused of falsely reporting a larceny they both thought they saw happen, but it didn't. 

They admitted to police they were on glass cleaner.

“What we're talking about isn't the glass cleaner you may find in your home or office, it’s a white powdery substance.

It’s being sold and bought in New York because there is no criminal law that prohibits it. 

We talked to Bill Bowman from the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Council of Jefferson County about the drug.

He said people can use the drug, but they can't be charged with a crime.

When a law prohibits a drug like bath salts or glass cleaner, the drug maker changes the name and chemical makeup of his drug and it becomes legal.

“All a chemist has to do in a clandestine laboratory is tweak it slightly, you know, a whole new compound," said Bowman.

7 News went to four head shops in Jefferson County.

Three of them told us they didn't sell glass cleaner or bath salts, but Tebb's head shop in Northland Plaza sold us the drug. 

The availability of the drug in the area has motivated ASAC to work with the district attorney to draft a county law banning these synthetic drugs.

The district attorney says the draft of the law is in its early stages.
