New Bremen Ice Harvest Falls Victim To Weird Winter

For some, the mild temperatures that kept Crystal Pond from really freezing this winter are a welcome change.

But not for John Boyd.

"I disagree with those people," said Boyd.

That's because for Boyd, and many other New Bremen folks, winter means it's time for the annual ice harvest.

But the mild temperatures this year didn't allow Crystal Pond to freeze enough for harvesting.

If you're wondering what the ice harvest is, it's a tradition which goes back to 1964.

Volunteers measure out ice blocks, cut them up and pull them out of the pond.

The blocks are sold to raise money for the local fire department.

Even if there is a cold snap, Boyd says an ice harvest is not going to happen this year.

"It's too late to get cold," said Boyd, who's a volunteer.

Instead, Boyd is left with memories of ice harvests past and hope for a frigid winter next year.
