New Fort Drum Facility Helps Make Soldiers 'Fit' For Battle
Climbing mountains, jumping out of helicopters, lifting gear -- it's what soldiers are required to do on the battlefield. And, they need to be in shape for it.
The ribbon was cut Friday afternoon on what's called a Functional Fitness facility. Fort Drum is the first Army post to have a gym like this.
There's astro turf, a boxing ring and other specialized equipment to train muscles for combat.
"This facility will prepare your body and your mind for that," said Randy Gillette of Functional Fitness.
"It's all about muscle memory, which you learn here in Functional Fitness," he said. "You will keep that inside you wherever you go for combat."
The project took eight months to complete and cost just over $2 million.
Two other gyms on post will also receive makeovers with new equipment and machines.
