New Potsdam Police Chief Takes Reins At Difficult Time
Potsdam's new police chief is taking over at a time when the department is under fire for its investigation into the homicide of a 12 year old boy.
Kevin Bates is a 17-year veteran of the department and takes over for Ed Tischler, who retired at the end of March.
The unsolved murder of Garrett Phillips is weighing heavily on the department, but Bates says he'll continue focusing on community policing.
"The Potsdam Police Department has had a long history, tradition, if you will, of community-oriented policing," Bates said.
"My philosophy is to continue that tradition. Our focus is to serve the residents and visitors of the village of Potsdam to the best of our ability."
Bates says the transition has been smooth so far, mostly because of how close-knit the police department is.
