New Unemployment Figures Mixed For North Country

The North Country's jobless rates for April are in and there's mixed news to report.

The unemployment rate dropped in Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties compared to March.

However, there were slightly more people out of work in Jefferson and Lewis counties compared to April of last year.

Jefferson County's April 2012 rate dropped to 10.1 percent from 11.1 percent in March.

It's only up slightly from the 10 percent recorded in April of last year.

In Lewis County, unemployment dropped from 11.5 percent in March to 10.2 percent in April.

Last April's rate was 9.9 percent.

St. Lawrence County's rate dropped from 11 percent to 10.1 percent from March to April.

Last year, the county recorded 10.3 percent for the month.

Statewide, unemployment dropped from 8.7 percent in March to 8.1 percent in April. The rate is worse than last April's 7.7 percent.

Nationwide, unemployment was 7.7 percent in April, 8.4 percent in March and 8.7 percent last April.
