Sunday was the first day without New York state sales tax on clothing and footwear costing under $110 dollars.

It may not sound like a lot, but could result in significant savings for some.  For example, if you were to spend $1,000 this year on clothing, that's $40 dollars back into your wallet.

County sales tax will remain in place, meaning you won't be getting anything completely duty free.

State Senator Patty Ritchie (R-48th District) voted for the sales tax exemption and thinks it will make a difference for both consumers and businesses.

"It's another tax break for middle class families in New York State. It should help local businesses with the number of Canadian shoppers," says Ritchie.
