Feedback: Newton Falls Paper Mill Won't Reopen In October, 90 Workers Affected

By Diane Rutherford

Approximately 90 people who were employed by the Newton Falls Fine Paper mill will not be going back to work in October as expected.

Plant management gave workers the bad news Wednesday.

The mill, which initially laid off 80 employees in December 2010 due to sluggish paper orders and the downtown in the economy, planned to restructure the business and reopen in October.

A skeleton crew of approximately 10 people remained at the plant during the reorganization.

However, management informed the 90 or so employees Wednesday that they will receive severance packages.

Workers will receive eight weeks pay as well as medical and dental insurance coverage through July.

The plant's owner, Scotia Investments, said it remains committed to reopening the mill.

According to a news release, mill management is looking for investors to pump capital into the operation.

An undisclosed number of workers are left at the plant while the mill seeks seek business partners.
