An ex-employee of the Jefferson Community College bookstore who stole $65,000 was sentenced in Jefferson County Court Tuesday.

Nancy Lear was sentenced to five years probation and ordered to spend weekends in jail for the next four months.

The 42 year old Dexter woman was also ordered to pay $47,419.12 in restitution.

She has already paid $18,300.

During sentencing, Lear told the court she was sorry.

Lear was arrested last December.

Police said she took money from the JCC bookstore by making false computer entries that showed books in inventory that did not exist.

That way, police said, she was able to receive cash in exchange for the nonexistent books.

Police said the thefts occurred from April through November of 2012.

Lear was employed by JCC's Faculty-Student Association (FSA), which runs the bookstore.

The FSA terminated Lear's employment effective December 10, 2012.
