Sources: Norfolk's Top Cop Suspended

The man in charge of Norfolk's police department has been suspended, and may be fired, after he allegedly viewed "inappropriate material" on a town computer.

Two independent sources with direct knowledge of the event told 7 News Scott Bennett was suspended August 3 when a town official discovered he had images of a sexual nature on the police department computer.

Town attorney Eric Gustafson declined comment citing "a confidential personnel matter." Town Supervisor Charles Pernice confirmed Bennett had been suspended but declined further comment.

Bennett has been Norfolk's Officer In Charge for close to 10 years.

This isn't the first time Bennett's actions have been called into question. Bennett was involved in a high speed chase involving an intoxicated motorcyclist in 2011. The biker crashed and died during the pursuit.

Bennett was cleared of any wrongdoing by Sheriff's investigators.

Town Board members will meet in executive session Monday night to decide whether to terminate Bennett's employment.

Bennett could not be reached for comment.
