Norfolk's Top Cop Retiring In Midst of Controversy

The man in charge of Norfolk's police department says he's retiring.

Scott Bennett, who was suspended after he allegedly viewed "inappropriate material" on a town computer, told 7 News by phone that he's stepping down.

"I'm retiring. That's what I'm doing. I am strictly retiring. I have over 30 years in the system. I don't know why this is all being blown out of proportion," he said.

Two independent sources, with direct knowledge of the event, told 7 News Bennett was suspended with pay August 3 when a town official discovered Bennett had images of a sexual nature on the police department computer.

Town of Norfolk board members are scheduled to meet in executive session Monday night to discuss the matter.

Officer Carla Trimm, a three-year veteran of the department, was named acting officer in charge.

Bennett had been in charge of the police department for ten years.
