North Country Children's Clinic Director Stepping Down

The North Country Children's Clinic is searching for a new executive director.

Its current director, Aileen Martin, announced Thursday that she will step down on July 1, citing personal reasons.

"Being an executive director of such a large non-profit agency when things are really difficult for non-profits, becomes incredibly intense. I was lucky enough to have family members to kind of pull an intervention and said if you don't change how you're living, the rest of your life is going to suffer," said Martin during an appearance on 7 News at Noon.

Martin has served as the agency's executive director since July 2009.

She is not renewing her contract because of family concerns.

Martin said she works at least 70 hours a week and that the workload continues to pile up.

She said the clinic has seen a dramatic increase in demand for it services while funding continues to be cut.

In fact, Martin has tried to save money by having the administrative staff clean its offices.

"We vacuum our own floors. We take out our own garbage. We all take turns once a week to do all of our own duties, and again, that happens in the after hours. So it definitely becomes intense and there are many people who are also committed to doing 110 percent," said Martin.

Martin has no plans beyond the end of her contract and pledges to be supportive to the Clinic in any way she can.

A search committee, composed of board and staff members and chaired by Board President Paul Kraeger is being formed to begin looking for Martin's replacement.
