North Country Civilians To Renew Support Of Local Troops

In 2004, hundreds of north country residents gathered at the Salmon Run Mall to show support for the troops and their families.

Eight years later, they're asked to do it again.

"We've been committed to soldiers and families and we're going to continue being committed to soldiers and families," said Mary Corriveau, vice-chair of the Fort Drum Regional Liaison Organization.

On Friday at 1 p.m. at the Salmon Run Mall, the north country will renew a covenant with the Army that promises to support military families.

"It's a symbolic way for the civilian and military communities to come together and to show that we really do support one another," said Beth Fipps, chair of the FDRLO.

The timing of the covenant renewal could help boost Watertown in a national competition.

The city is a finalist to be named America's most patriotic town.

Judges will visit the city sometime in the next month to see first hand how Watertown shows its patriotism.

Officials hope the city's relationship with Fort Drum will impress the judges.

"We think if they come up and visit Fort Drum, that's going to come out in spades in all the things we do and that's important to us because we think we are the most patriotic town in America," said Joseph McLaughlin, president of NNY Chapter of AUSA.

Officials hope to find out soon when judges will come take a look at Watertown.

They could arrive anytime between Friday and July 13.
