North Country Continues With Double-Digit Unemployment

The north country continued to have some of the highest unemployment rates in New York in April, according to the state Labor Department.

Lewis County had the state's second highest jobless rate - 10.9 percent.

Jefferson County has the fourth highest rate - 10.3 percent.

There is a bit of good news to report - Lewis County's unemployment rate dropped from 12.2 percent in March, while Jefferson County's rate decreased from 11.4 percent.

St. Lawrence County's jobless rate for April stands at 9.8 percent, down from 10.8 percent in March.

The counties in New York state with the lowest unemployment rates include:

- Tompkins County (4.8%)
- Nassau County (5.8%)
- Rockland County (5.8%)
- Putnam County (5.9%)

The counties in New York state with the highest unemployment rates include:

- Lewis County (12.3%)
- Hamilton County (12.0%)
- Bronx County (11.6%)
- Jefferson County (11.5%)

The state's April jobless rate stands at 7.8 percent, down from 8.1 percent in March.
