North Country Jobless Rates Remain Steady Or Drop

There's some good news to report on the north country's unemployment front.

Fewer people were looking for jobs last month compared to September as well as in October 2012.

The state released its unemployment figures Tuesday.

According to the Labor Department, Jefferson County's jobless rate remained at 8.7 percent last month.

In October 2012, the rate was 9.4 percent.

In Lewis County, the unemployment rate was 8 percent last month.

That compares to 8.4 percent in September and 8.8 percent in October 2012.

In St. Lawrence County, the jobless rate was 8.3 percent in October.

That's down from 8.5 percent in September and 9.4 percent the year before.

The state's unemployment rate dropped .1 percent between September and October to 7.4 percent.

It was down from 8.1 percent in October 2012.

The counties in New York state with the highest unemployment rates include:

-Bronx County (12.2%)
-Kings County (9.6%)
-Jefferson County (8.7%)
-Orleans County (8.5%)
-St. Lawrence County (8.3%)

The counties in New York state with the lowest unemployment rates include:

-Tompkins County (4.8%)
-Yates County (5.2%)
-Hamilton County (5.3%)
-Putnam County (5.5%)
-Saratoga County (5.5%)
