North Country Jobless Rates Drop, But Still Some Of NY's Highest


Once again, Lewis and Jefferson counties have New York's first and second highest unemployment rates outside of New York City.

However, the jobless numbers improved slightly between February and March.

According to the state Labor Department, Lewis County's unemployment rate was 10.7 percent in March, which is down from 10.9 percent in February.  It's down a percent from March 2013.

In Jefferson County, the jobless rate was 10.1 percent last month, compared to 10.5 percent in February.

In March 2013, the unemployment rate in the county was 11.1 percent.

St. Lawrence County had a 9.2 percent unemployment rate in March, down from 9.7 percent the previous month.

In March of 2013, the rate was 10.2 percent.

The counties in New York state with the highest unemployment rates include:

  - Bronx County (11.7%)
  - Lewis County (10.7%)
  - Jefferson County (10.1%)
  - Hamilton (9.6%)
  - Orleans (9.5%)

 The counties in New York with the lowest unemployment rates include:

  - Tompkins County (4.4%)
  - Nassau County (5.2%)
  - Putnam County (5.2%)
  - Rockland County (5.3%)
  - Albany County (5.5%)
