Norwood Officials Want Village "Eyesore" Cleaned Up

A fire-ravaged building in the village of Norwood will need a special variance from the state in order to have the property cleaned-up.

The century old former elementary school was destroyed in an arson fire in November 2009.

Village officials say the property owners, I.B. Property Holdings Inc. of Coral Gables, Florida, have failed to respond to requests to remove the debris and clean up the property, which has been an eyesore for residents in the neighborhood.

Mayor Jim McFaddin says the village will meet next Tuesday to act on the hiring of GYMO Engineering of Watertown to seek a hardship variance from the state Department of Environmental Conservation and Department of Labor to get the site cleaned.

"What we would do is bill them for whatever costs we incur and if they don't pay, our attorney is prepared to court," said McFaddin.

McFaddin said the village plans to bill the property owners for the cost of the cleanup.
