Not Enough Space To Cook? Check Out New Community Kitchen

Gas stoves, ovens, refrigerators and endless counter space.

The kitchen is 1,500 square feet, fully equipped and now open to the public.

It's the grand opening of a community-shared kitchen at Madison Barracks in Sackets Harbor.

"We're out there working in the community trying to move along the local food industry and we've identified a number of barriers for a lot of local businesses to be able to grow their businesses," said Kevin Jordan, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County.

One of those barriers is not enough space.

The kitchen has what's called a 20-C certification from the state Department of Agriculture - the first in Jefferson County to have one.

The owner says it will allow local food processors to package, market and sell more of their products.

"The big thing is the room. A lot of people don't have the amount of room to accommodate the volume of product that they're manufacturing - their preserves or dressings or anything that requires a kitchen," said Corry Lawler owner of the community kitchen.

Cooking, baking and everything in between - in this kitchen the sky is the limit.

"If you want to cook Christmas cookies and your kitchen is too small, use ours. That's kind of the philosophy and what's going on," said Michael Campbell of Lawler Development.

DeVito's Catering rents the space three days a week.

The rest of the time, it's empty.

People who are interested in using the kitchen can rent time based on their needs.
