It seems like hardly a day goes by without police reporting a domestic dispute that turned violent.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in New York state.
At the Victims Assistance Center of Jefferson County, they say the case load is up.
But there's good news: the center has just opened a new, state-of-the-art shelter.
"It's cozy for children, there's play areas, it's all one floor and it really is a wonderfully safe and warm place for people to come to use," said director Elaina Marra.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is asking New Yorkers to wear purple this Wednesday as part of the state's annual "shine the light on domestic violence" campaign.
