Officials Concerned About Crime in St. Lawrence CountyA rash of violent incidents in St. Lawrence County have local law enforcement officers concerned. Massena has seen two recent suicides, including one that occurred in the entrance to the local hospital. Last week a teenager was taken into custody after allegedly making a homemade bomb that he planned to detonate at the Massena Arena. Massena Police Chief Timmy Currier says often times, when potentially violent incidents or criminal activity occurs there are links to either prescription drug abuse or mental health issues involved. "It certainly concerns everyone, as you see more incidents like this occurring. Mental health issues in our communities are nothing new to us, and certainly the information that people now bring forward to us...has increased too. I'm just thankful that people brought this information forward so we can act upon it in a timely manner," says Currier. Meanwhile, there are three unsolved homicides still being investigated in the county, including that of a boy strangled in his mothers apartment in Potsdam last fall. Most Popular |
