Ogdensburg Faces Fines Over Idled Cheese Plant

The city of Ogdensburg could face fines of up to $37,500 a day after being cited for a half-dozen violations at the idled Tubroburg Cheese Plant.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) inspected the closed plant in June and found the city, which now owns it, had failed to conduct required monthly inspections.

The DEC also found the city did not have proper identification labeling on storage containers.

The DEC is also requiring the city to clean up 36 drums of waste liquid that were left by the plant's previous owner when the operation closed in January 2011.

The city also needs to clean up a 12,000-gallon bulk petroleum storage tank.

City councilors will decide Monday night whether to enter into a $25,000 contract with an environmental firm to remove the contamination.
