Update: Watertown fire officials say the Spaziani Bakery fire was an accident. See our story.

Watertown city firefighters battled a blaze at the old Spaziani Bakery Tuesday afternoon.

The fire at 612 Swan Street was called in at approximately 1 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they were met with heavy smoke coming from the building.

Officials said the situation was so dangerous at first that firefighters had to be pulled back to battle the blaze from the air and the road.

"Due to uncertain circumstances or conditions that may be within the building, our crews backed out and started what is known as defensive operations," said Fire Chief Dale Herman.

Members of the Spaziani family were at the scene and said the building was being used for storage.

George Marcinko, Jr. worked at the family bakery.

His grandfather, Gaetano Spaziani, who was simply known as Guy, started the bakery in the early 1900s.

"Everybody's son or daughter from this family somehow was tied up in this business," said Marcinko.

The family said it appeared the fire got its start in the old wedding hall.

Herman confirmed the blaze started on the second floor, which was destroyed.

No injuries were reported.

The Spaziani family said the Italian American Club used the building for its first meetings years ago.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
