Operation Hang Up

By Scott Atkinson

Thanksgiving weekend is one of the biggest travel times of the year, so the roads are pretty crowded with a lot of extra cars.

A lot of extra state troopers are on the roads this weekend too. They're cracking down on distracted driving.

It is an enhanced enforcement campaign, called "Operation Hang Up", intended to reduce the number of traffic accidents.

State police say they want to ensure everyone gets to where they're going safely, so drivers need to keep their eyes on the road and hands on the wheel - and off of their cell phones and other electronic devices.

"Whether talking on a cell phone or texting, it's becoming a big problem not only within the state, but across the country" said State Police Zone Sergeant Robert Allen.

"If you need to make a phone call or answer the phone, pull over on the side of the road, or someplace where it's safe," he said.

Under a state law that went into effect earlier this year, using handheld electronics while driving is now a primary offense - meaning it's the only reason police need to pull you over.
