Outside Investigation For Jefferson County Sheriff's Department?

An outside investigation could be coming to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.

This comes a week after Sheriff John Burns suspended one of his deputies who's accused of having an open alcoholic beverage container in his car in December.

Another deputy is also facing disciplinary action in that case.

County Legislators tell 7 News they are considering an outside investigation into the sheriff's department's handling of the December incident.

But first, they're giving the sheriff time.

Chairwoman Carolyn Fitzpatrick said in a phone call with 7 News, "We are giving the sheriff an opportunity to get it straightened out on his own and show some leadership."

Fitzpatrick followed up by saying, "If we need an independent or outside investigation, I will not hesitate."

Burns said in a phone call that he has done nothing wrong and says he's open to an outside investigation.

"If that's what they would like, that's fine," he said.

County District Attorney Cindy Intschert declined our request for an interview.

It's unclear when Legislators will decide whether or not to move forward with an outside investigation or what additional information they're waiting for.
