Pellet Pistol, Pocket Knife Taken from Students At Watertown SchoolOfficials said a spring action pellet pistol and a pocket knife were found in the possession of two students at Wiley Intermediate School Wednesday. There's no evidence to suggest that either student intended to harm anyone, officials said. Authorities said the students are being held accountable under school policies. The separate incidents come amid a couple of tense days for the Watertown City School District. More than a quarter of Watertown High School students remained absent Wednesday as a result of rumors of impending violence at the school. Attendance is better than Tuesday when more than half the students stayed home in the wake of Facebook threats that someone planned to bring a gun to school. Superintendent Terry Fralick said 348 out of 1,205 students were absent Wednesday, compared with the over 600 who didn't attend classes Tuesday. Security has been stepped up and school officials say it's safe to return. The hightened security will remain until at least the end of the week. Watertown city police continue to investigate who posted the threats on the social website. "Making idle threats or passing on rumor and innuendo, it does sometimes have dire consequences," said Watertown Police Chief Joe Goss. "Facebook is a social media that we have really no control over and it really has become a bigger problem for us and other school districts," Fralick said. Attendance was also down Tuesday at nearby Case and Wiley schools. No figures were available. The increased security did lead to one arrest Tuesday. A 15 year old is accused of having a set of brass knuckles in his locker. Police say, however, they believe the weapons were there for some time and were not related to recent rumors. Most Popular |
