Owens Sponsors Bill To Make Selling Fake Maple Syrup A Felony

A proposed new law could make for a sticky situation for anyone caught selling fake maple syrup they intentionally misidentify as pure.

Congressman Bill Owens is sponsoring a bill that increases the charge from a misdemeanor to a felony for the fraudulent sale of maple syrup.

If convicted an individual could face up to five years in prison, comparable to sentences handed to first time violent felony offenders.

Owens says the law needs to be tightened to protect the North Country's maple producers.

Owens says the Maple Agriculture Protection and Law Enforcement, or MAPLE, Act is picking up support in both Congressional houses and could become law by next year.
