A town of Rutland woman was charged Tuesday with leaving a dog in a hot car in a department store parking lot.

Jefferson County sheriff's deputies say the windows on the car were down only an inch and the dog was on the floor, panting heavily and appeared to be in distress.

The car was at the Walmart on outer Arsenal Street in Watertown. Deputies say the outside temperature when it happened -- around 11:30 a.m. -- was around 85 degrees.

The owner, 47 year old Dawn Gleason, was ticketed under the state's agriculture and markets law.

Deputies say the dog appeared to recover after the owner gave it some water.
