Every day people paddle up and down the St. Lawrence River, but there’s only one day a year when you’ll see dozens at once.
The Foundation for Community Betterment is a national organization, with chapters across the country. One of those chapters is in Alexandria Bay. For the past ten years the Alexandria Bay chapter has hosted the “Paddle for Betterment.” It’s an event that helps North Country people in need.
This year nearly 50 volunteers helped organize the event. About one hundred paddlers took to the water, navigating nearly four miles of the St. Lawrence River, to raise money for Alexandria Central School and two local families in need.
Organizers say this year’s “Paddle” is the biggest yet. They estimate that the event helped raise about $10,000, all of which will go back into the community.
