A Potsdam-area paper mill has won a statewide award for its environment-friendly practices.

Potsdam Specialty Papers in Unionville was honored by the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute for spending about $1 million on upgrades that reduce electricity consumption and cut down on waste.
Electricity use has declined by nearly four million kilowatts a year and a paper fiber recovery project has nearly eliminated waste.
The mill also made improvements to its rail line so shipments can be made by train instead of trucks.
The mill specializes in latex- and acrylic-based papers.
