Parishville Says 'No' To Smoking At Park, Beach

The Town of Parishville in St. Lawrence County is following what nearly a dozen communities in St. Lawrence County have already done - instituting a 'no smoking' rule at the town park and beach.

A tobacco-free parks sign has already been put up at the town beach altering visitors to the new policy.

Town officials said the smoking and chewing tobacco ban is being instituted to cut down on the unsightly litter and curb second hand smoke exposure:

Officials say compliance is voluntary; there are no 'smoking police' on patrol for people who light up in violation of the signs.

Officials hope the new tobacco-free policy will work, much like a similar policy in place prohibiting dogs in the park.

(Meanwhile, a 'smokers' rights' group is challenging the state's right to put up 'no smoking' signs at state facilities. Read our story here.)
