North country law enforcement agencies are warning people of a telephone scam involving a well-known organization that helps older Americans.

St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells says a caller offers a free senior alert system and $3,000 a month in coupons from the AARP.

The caller says AARP got the name of the intended victim from the victim's health care provider. People who answer the phone are asked to press 1 to get the free system or 5 to notify their health care provider they're not interested.

Wells says anyone who receives the call should hang up and not press any options.

He says AARP knows about the scam and is trying to find out who's behind it.

The sheriff says AARP does not make these types of calls.
