Pets Benefit From Partnership Between SPCA & Petco
The cages are often empty at the dog room at Petco. And that's a good thing.
Petco, on outer Arsenal Street in Watertown, has teamed up with Jefferson County SPCA to help animals find homes -- and it's working.
"We just can't keep the place stocked with animals," SPCA executive director Doug Marlow said.
Dogs and cats that are taken from the SPCA to the satellite adoption center at Petco are finding forever homes fast.
"Lots of them go pretty quickly when they're up here," Lydia Marlow said, "so it's been good."
"We get calls saying 'we're on our way for the dachshund,'" Doug Marlow said, "and the dachshund was adopted four hours ago."
Even when there aren't any dogs available at Petco, there are still some waiting for adoption at the SPCA's shelter on Water Street.
But because of the success of the Petco adoption center, there are fewer animals than there used to be.
"The adoption center has changed our life considerably at the SPCA," Doug Marlow said.
And it's also changed the lives of many formerly unwanted animals in Jefferson County.
