Plane Crash Vicitims' Names ReleasedState police have released the names of the people who were in the plane that crashed in a lake in a remote part of Herkimer County Thursday morning. Police say neither the pilot, 34 year old Benjamin Brown of North Carolina, nor his passenger, 44 year old Charles Davis of Utah, was hurt in the crash. The plane, a 2010 Jabiru, left Burlington, Vermont early Thursday and experienced mechanical failure around 8:30 a.m., police say. It crashed in Gull Lake in about 30 feet of water. Two Air National Guard helicopters from Long Island were on their way to Fort Drum for training when they heard the mayday and rescued the two men. Pilot and passenger were taken to Fort Drum. A spokesman for the 106th rescue wing says luck and timing led to a swift rescue. "For them to be in the area when the aircraft was going down, to hear the call, and to be able to do their search and pick these guys up in pretty short order, I would say, was definitely fortuitous for the two individuals," Maj. Guiseppe Scaglione said. The Federal Aviation Administration describes the plane as a homemade civilian aircraft. The Vermont National Guard says it was under contract to help with military training in the area. |
