Police Officer With Local Ties Dies In The Line Of Duty

A police officer with ties to the north country was gunned down in Galt, California, Tuesday morning.

Officials said 35 year old Kevin Tonn was fatally shot during a confrontation with a man he was questioning in connection with a burglary.

Tonn had been a volunteer with the Philadelphia Fire Department for a number of years before moving to California.

Philadelphia Fire Chief Rodney LaMora said Tonn was stationed at Fort Drum in the 1990s as a military police officer.

During the Ice Storm of 1998, LaMora said Tonn began volunteering with the fire department and became a valued member, who successfully wrote grants to purchase equipment.

Tonn became a fire department captain and emergency medical services chief, LaMora said.

According to LaMora, Tonn left the military, but used his volunteer experience to become a federal firefighter at Fort Drum.

"He was a great guy, a good friend. I'm going to miss him," said LaMora.

According to news reports, Tonn had been with the Galt Police Department for three and a half years.

He joined the force in September 2009 after graduating from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Academy.

With the Galt department, he was a canine officer working with a German shepherd named Yaro.

Tonn was not married and had no children, according to news reports.

The man who shot Tonn then shot and killed himself.
