Potsdam Man Accused Of Filing False Tax Returns

A 53 year old Potsdam man faces federal charges for allegedly filing false tax returns.

A federal grand jury in Syracuse returned a six-count indictment against Timothy Schmidt.

He's accused of having "substantially greater taxable income" than he reported on his returns.

Schmidt allegedly filed false tax returns for six years in a row - 2005 through 2010.

If found guilty, Schmidt faces a maximum sentence of 3 years in prison, a term of supervised release of up to 1 year, and a maximum fine of $100,000.
